The Living Room Lives! We did it y’all!

We are so proud to announce that our community campaign to back the Living Room was successful.

OUR LIVING ROOM LIVES!

In the 68 days since we invited the community to back our campaign, 133 people have signed on as Founding Members for the Living Room and many more have shown their solidarity by amplifying, affirming, donating and caring. We still have a lot to do in order to achieve our sustainability and imagined reality - but there was enough money, magic and momentum for us to feel confident to take another leap.

What does it mean to take another leap? It means we are committed to extending the Living Room at least until the end of the year. It means that we are trusting the elements of emergent strategy, which includes knowing that our path is not-linear and relies heavily on our sense of belief. Belief is hard in a world with an abundance of fear, doubt, extraction and oppression. It requires labour and as one member of our community wrote, it is “a priceless currency to human flourishing”.

Another member in the community recently mentioned that there’s a lot of BBE (Big Believer Energy) in Reset's universe. It’s true and that’s been the case since we first started in 2015 when we began playing with unconventional approaches to address our universal experiences of disconnection. That thread of belief has continued to show up so much over the last 9 years and is why we’ve been able to do 9 Camp Resets, 50 pop up playgrounds, 1 record setting hug and a love letter to Little Jamaica.

And it most recently has shown up again over the course of this campaign during which a community has expressed their BELIEF in the idea of our living room and that flowers can indeed grow through the cracks.

So what’s next?

If you have not backed the campaign, we feel the love in so many other ways (including your time and presence in this very moment). We also know we are not for everyone! But if you're interested, in late April we will begin communicating info around how things like day passes will work and some other programs that will improve access further.

We have capped our memberships now so that we can prioritize our presence with folks better and so that we can go slow. Thank you to our Grantors and Donors for enabling this slowness and our desire for being more relational.

Finally and on the topic of acknowledgements…

There are so many people to acknowledge but to prioritize the idea that this is truly a collective effort - we have intentionally not named anyone specifically here. If you know us, this is very hard to do. But please know we do endeavour to acknowledge everyone by name, over time and in ways that feel authentic and real.

Until then and again, thank you for so much for everything and especially for your belief.

Why did we launch the campaign?

We are more divided, disconnected and lonely than ever before.

According to the Toronto Foundation’s Vital Signs 2023 Special Report, Toronto is one of the loneliest places in Canada. Last year, 37% of adults in Toronto felt lonely three or four days of the week, 23% of Toronto’s adult population reported symptoms consistent with a major depression disorder, and 19% reported symptoms consistent with generalized anxiety disorder.

Since our inception in 2015, we’ve been exploring new ways to address our disconnection and for the last 2 years, we’ve been researching and prototyping new models for community spaces in Little Jamaica.

Our learnings lead us to the Community Living Room concept and to we’re inviting 150 people to be a part of this journey and join us as Founding Members by March 31. Much like a traditional crowdfunding campaign, you won’t paying anything unless we reach our target.

We’re open to grants, donations and creative solutions.

Being successful in our campaign means we are covering our basic needs and basic potential. However, our quality of life and quality of impact can be significantly enhanced with the support and solidarity of those who can provide it financially. Reset is a registered social enterprise but we are able to issue tax receipts via our trustee for donations 5K or higher.
